Legenda Boko dan 5 Pulau (2025) - BONBIN Studio

Background Artist, Contract Work

As a form of conservation of traditional Indonesian folklore by local Ministry of Education and Culture, "Legenda Boko dan 5 Pulau" (The Legend of Boko and The 5 Islands) were created in partnership with BONBIN Studio and Visual Communication Design program in Bandung Institute of Technology.

Based on the folklore of West Sumatra, the historic appearance of five exotic islands became the central part of Padang Island history. It was associated by Boko (antagonist), a young boy bullied by his community for the lack of family wealth took control of the matter himself and left his mother (protagonist) to find success. After joining a rich merchant's quest for riches, he only once returned after reaching adulthood– which led his arrogance cloud over his mother's loving anticipation to meet his son again.

Production

As a background artist, I was tasked to turn storyboard thumbnails into illustrated animation-ready background assets. 16 background thumbnails were assigned on my line up.

All rough thumbnails approved by the Art Director (Luthfi) were firstly sketched with clear set-ups of background, mid-ground, and foreground, all highlighted on greyscale to emphasise depth. Canvas size, visual development, bleeds, and character allocations were all considered and reviewed before finalizing the render stage.

After all sketches were approved, rendering stage were done according to the visual development guidelines.

Some background layers have assigned allocations of characters as a guide during compositing phase.

Title Art Production

After being assigned to design and illustrate the title art, wood textures were appointed as the main material as a reference. With merchant ships and nature as one of the main themes of the story, the art direction team insisted on emphasizing its presenece in right from the opening title. Rough sketches were first rendered in greyscale to have its depth focused. After one sketch was approved, it was then rendered within photoshop.
