Simba (2021) - Happy Andromeda, Ananta Vinnie & Karen Claudia
Animated Lyric Video • Illustration • Motion Design
With the release of the new upcoming single, Simba (2021) expresses playful and upbeat pop culture that remains accessible for the coming-of-age demographic.
Pre-Production
The song had finalized its production when the client started approaching. During the planning stage, I dissected the lyrics to find key imagery relevant to the song, with respect to sound effects, song pacing, and descriptive elements present within the lyrics. I believe emphasizing elements already present within the song will aid the visualization process of the lyric video. Therefore, I resorted to background illustrations set in nature reflective of the character Simba from Disney's The Lion King (1994).
Backgrounds illustration starts from sunset and ending during sunrise. This follows the singers' voice characteristics and lyrics of the song. It reflects the "sad but hopeful" nature of the song and let the lyrics stand out.

"Simba" is performed by Happy Andromeda and Karen Claudia, both having different voice traits. Happy Andromeda has a strong volume, clear vocal timbre, and low-to-medium voice frequency. He lead verse 1, verse 2, and the first chorus of the song, then continued to sing in unison with Karen on the second chorus until the end of the song.
The initial warmth of Happy's voice reflects a relaxed and easy welcome for listeners, hence the choice of illustrating backgrounds during sunset in verse 1.

Verse 2, however, contained a combination of hope and desperation. The slight shift of darkness after sunset often feels unsettling and vague, which is reflected on the lyrics of verse 2.
After the slight drop in hope, the chorus uplifts the mood with repetitive lyrics. It gave a huge boost of energy to the ambience. Lyrics of chorus 1 were emphasized by propelling into the direction of the audience, visualizing the new blast of hope the singers conveyed.

In contrast to other environments in previous scenes, the bridge within the song overlooks the whole globe, as a signifier to the panoramic climax of the song content before reaching the last chorus.

The song ends with a promising approach of dawn. The set becomes brighter and more colorful than the last few shots.
