Repetitive Packing & Between the Void (2023)

Linocut

In recollection of my personal experience as a Third Culture Kid (TCK), living in between countries during my formative years have influenced identity dynamics in all directions. From adjusting to differing education systems to revising my personal cultural beliefs, the experience itself has driven detachments from belongings and identity.

Repetitive Packing (2023)

Often, our sense of belonging is signified by physical objects. It could hold a specific memory that spans a period of time most can't revisit.

When TCKs are faced with high-mobility, leaving those commodities behind not only signifies the loss of the time they once lived, but also the impermanence of their identities. The growing minimalist movement has served many in order to let go of their personal "baggage" and live a stress-free life. But when that force became inevitable, leaving kids to dispose of most of their building blocks in early life into a suitcase alone can be disorienting.

Repetitive Packing (2023) is a recollection of "irrelevant" items left behind to make space for new ones.

Between the Void (2023)

Growing up religious awards many into welcoming-communities almost instantly. With fewer barriers to mutual understanding, it creates a safe space for the masses to connect and grow without compromising personal cultural identities. But borderlines do exist when certain pockets within communities demand uniformity just for the sake of respect. How does one negotiate one's belonging when perceived outlooks were ranked as the ultimate evidence of piousness?

Between The Void (2023) explores the fragmented religious identity of women with hijabs. Changing our appearance for the sake of conformity to what each community deems acceptable contradicts the values of sisterhood itself. While no women should go through such a thing, the experience can be far more disorienting for the ones enduring it during their formative years.
