Musical Instrument for Design Development Program to Support Music Education SDN Pertiwi Elementary School
Community Service
This community service project was initiated in response to the limited access to arts and cultural education in elementary schools in Bandung, Indonesia. Many musical instruments are costly and require ongoing maintenance, while arts and culture educators are scarce and often hold multiple roles, leaving teachers with limited time and, in many cases, without formal arts backgrounds to deliver effective music instruction for students in grades 4–5.
To address this, our team developed an affordable, safe, and durable musical instrument called the slapophone, designed to be fun and easily personalized by students. The project also included an instructional booklet to support teachers in using the instrument and introducing basic musical concepts. After a two-week assembly process, the slapophones were delivered to the school, where students in grades 4–5 painted and personalized them, encouraging creativity and engagement.
